Literary Stylings # 6

This outfit is based on the character of Caesar Flickerman from Catching Fire, by Suzanne Collins:

   

How so?  Well, he has blue hair and I�m wearing a blue hat.  And I�m pretty sure he loves shiny stuff so I�m wearing a shiny blue sweatshirt.  But, it�s my Caesar Flickerman Weekend Look so instead of pairing it with equally shiny blue pants that I don�t own but obviously need, I paired it with plaid:

Unfortunately, I think the resulting look is less �Caesar Flickerman On The Weekend,� and more �glitter grunge.�  Which is a thing I just accidentally invented but kind of love.  Seriously, folks, Glitter Grunge could totally be my new aesthetic as well as the name of my new all-female grunge band; we�ll cover Nirvana (because of course), Hole and Garbage.  It will be both dark and glittery.

Enough of that nonsense (though I suspect we�ll revisit it at some point), let�s get back to my look.  Caesar Flickerman is my favorite and I adore how Stanley Tucci plays him with those giant Chiclet teeth of his.  That�s not an insult; I love big teeth and big smiles.  And I love Caesar Flickerman and my Caesar Flickerman-inspired outfit:

How It Works

My sister looked at today�s outfit and said �I don�t get it�:

I said, �What is there to get?  They�re both plaid.�

She responded with, �I don�t think that�s how it works.�

I responded by laughing really loudly and saying �That�s exactly how it works.�

The thing is, I honestly do think this outfit makes perfect sense.  I�ve had the skirt for a while but the sweater vest is a recent thrifted acquisition.  But, when I tried the vest on, my immediate* thought was that I would wear it with this skirt.  

For me, a plaid with a plaid is nothing but good, especially when the other rules of pattern mixing are followed; these pieces have a similar scale and they share a predominant color.

Okay, so I guess both pieces being plaid isn�t what makes these pieces work together, but I still maintain that they do work.

*Okay, that�s not entirely true.  My actual immediate thought when trying this vest on was �holy side-boob!� as it�s open basically to the waist.  But, my second thought was to pair it with this skirt.  I swear.

Dress Like A Wasp's Nest

I feel like a cocoon today.  Or a wasp's nest, what with all my gray, lumpy layers:

Which isn't to say I don't like this outfit.  I actually really do.  It's cozy as hell and it's as comfortable as pajamas. And it's successful deployment of a maxi dress in cooler weather, which is something I've struggled with in the past.

What it's not, is figure-flattering.  I know as a blogger I'm supposed to be demonstrating how to dress in the most flattering way (Right?  Isn't that what I'm supposed to be doing here?), but I just can't do it.  You want to wear something that swallows your shape?  Go for it.  Dress like a wasp's nest, if you want.  I totally support that.

80s + Plaid = Love

This sweater is one of those fabled plaid pieces I thrifted this summer in anticipation of cooler weather:

 Well, cooler weather has arrived, and I finally (finally!) got to wear my beloved plaid cardigan.  And it was a delight.

Except that the super-low-v neckline gave me a bit of trouble.  It's not as though the girls popped out and waved at folks, but I could feel them thinking about it.  I tried to mitigate their overwhelming friendliness with a scarf, and I think that worked, but I was awfully warm all day.

I tell you, Friends, it's a rough day when a gal has to choose between sweating and flashing people.

Mad for Plaid

If you follow me on Pinterest, you know that I've been pinning the heck out of plaid looks for this fall.  I have, so far, resisted the urge to run out and buy/thrift a bunch of plaid but I'm no longer able resist wearing the plaid items I already own.  Like this plaid skirt:

I thrifted this skirt a couple of years ago but, apparently I wasn't that in to plaid a couple of years ago because I rarely wore it.  I'm planning on making amends for that this fall because I am currently absolutely mad for plaid.

Today I wore the skirt (similar) with a chambray shirt (Caslon, similar), my much-loved Born Crown riding boots (similar) and a vintage ram belt.

I finished the look off with a ball-tasseled (basseled?) scarf (LOFT, similar):

Sure It�s Boxy, But It�s Plaid

And that is, apparently, reason enough for me, because, yeah, this dress is boxy.  But, it is also plaid:

And here at Fashion for Giants, we'll take plaid in any shape.

Yes, I could have worn a belt, but I didn�t.  I actually like the cut of this dress.  And the colors of the plaid are fun.  So, I may look like a box, but I look like a fun box.  So, no, no belt.   Just a vintage plaid dress (handmade via Goodwill) layered over a blue-striped blouse (Gap), blue tights (DKNY via Nordstrom) and riding boots (Born Crown via Nordstrom).

Oh, and I also wore my new carnelian Friendship Bracelet that the lovely people at RedEnvelope sent to me:

It also comes in iolite and aqua chalcedony, but, let�s be honest, I was never going to choose any color but orange.  And not just because it goes so well with plaid; as we all know, orange goes with everything so that�s a non-issue.  No, I just think the luminescent quality of carnelian orange is so pretty. Really though, I would have been happy with any of the colors or several other pieces from RedEnvelope; they have some lovely, lovely items.

Speaking of lovely, I thrifted a new coat on Saturday:

Which is also a bit boxy, isn't it?  Maybe boxy is my new thing?  I don't know, but I guess it's possible.  Again though, boxy or not, I love this coat; I love the color and the weight is perfect for spring.  Also, the bracelet sleeves show off my Red Envelope bracelet perfectly, so everybody wins.

The World�s Tallest Third Grader

Today I am dressed like the world�s tallest third grader:

I didn�t do it on purpose (I like to think I�d never infantilize myself on purpose).  It�s just that the shirt (vintage via Goodwill) and pants (Target) happened to be next to each other on my laundry chair (the chair that holds the overflow of clean laundry from my laundry basket) so I threw them on this morning. 

But I like it.  Yes, I would have worn this as a third grader but I�m not embarrassed to be wearing it now.  It�s bright and happy and cozy and involves my favorite pants, ankle-strap flats (Hive & Honey via Piperlime) and a neon necklace (Target).  

 

I tell you what, Friends; third graders might be on to something.

Silk, Wool & Silk-Lined Wool

Taking some of the awesome advice I received from yesterday�s post, I decided to forgo the jeans today and wear some warmer fabrics.  Specifically, silk, wool and silk-lined wool:

 

Instead of a cotton sweater, I wore a silk blouse (Jones New York via Goodwill) layered under a silk-lined wool jacket (vintage via Goodwill).  And, in lieu of jeans, I wore a sweater skirt (vintage via Goodwill) layered over bloomers and tights (Assets via Target) which were in turn layered over merino wool footless tights (Hue).  I also added wool socks, ankle boots (Nine West �Darsy�) and a belt (thrifted via Goodwill).

And, for the most part, it worked.  My feet are still cold, but I think that�s kind of their thing.  My torso is definitely warmer with the layers of silk and wool than with yesterday�s cotton sweater, even though it was a pretty dense knit.  I think I may also be warmer because of the pattern mixing going on; few things warm the cockles of my heart like pattern mixing:

Thank you all again for the tips on staying warm, with a special shout out to Secret Squirrel and her Nan; I tried the silk scarf layered under a knit scarf this morning and it was brilliant!

Clothes, Clever Title, Descriptive Words

I am exhausted today, folks.  Ex-haus-ted.  For reals.  And therefore, although I wore clothes, I pretty much have nothing to say about them.  But, here they are anyway:

And here are some descriptive words about them: I wore this outfit today; it was warm and bike-friendly.  I chose a gray sweater (Old Navy) and orange tights (Spanx via Nordstrom) to pick up the colors in the skirt (vintage, thrifted).  I like this skirt a lot.  It�s wool and plaid and pleated, so that�s fun.  I also wore a belt (thrifted), riding boots (Born Crown �Sosie� via Nordstrom) and a vintage moss agate necklace (via Lil� Gypsy Vintage).  This outfit makes sense.

Now, let�s talk about why I�m so tired.  I stayed up late, late, late last night finishing Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.  Have any of you read that book?  What did you think?  I think the premise was great, but even with the unusual plot, it felt a little clich� to me at times.  But, that could just be because I watch too much television.  Or, not enough�  I don�t know.  I don�t feel like I�m articulating my thoughts well enough (I am exhausted after all), but, what it comes down to, I didn�t always believe Amy�s character.  It seemed a little too contrived and manipulative on the part of the author.

Anyway, if you�ve read it, I�d love to hear what you thought.  And if you haven�t read it, I definitely recommend it and then we can discuss.
